The Greater Birmingham Convention and Visitors Bureau has teamed up with more than 45 area hotels to offer free Sunday night stays in and around the Alabama city.

To take advantage of the deal, you must stay at one of the participating hotels Friday and Saturday night. The third night is redeemed either by coupon, online or by phone. Properties vary but many are chains.

For example, rooms at the historic Redmont Hotel, the city’s oldest operating hotel, run $119 to $225 per night. The Hotel Highland at Five Points South, a botique property, charges $119 to $169. There is a 14 % lodging tax applicable to all three nights, which is extra.

This free night stay is valid between now through December.

Starwood Hotels and Resorts has reduced its rates by as much as 50 percent at about 600 of its hotels in North America, Latin America and Asia Pacific. The 50% discount is a huge saving but travelers must be mindful of that this offer is for a limited time only. You need to book by July 20 for stays from July 16 through October 12, 2009.

For example, Le Meridien Cancun Resort & Spa in Mexico has rooms from $121 a night plus $15 taxes; usual rate starts at $207.
